Historic CofGa Flat Car Donated to CGRHS PDF Print E-mail

Georgia Power, a subsidiary of the Southern Company, has donated a Central of Georgia 40' steel underframe flat car to the Central of Georgia Railway Historical Society. The flat car has been at Georgia Power’s Plant Hammond, near Rome, Georgia, for about 30 years. According the plant personnel, the car was used at one time for moving large equipment into the main building at Plant Hammond. However, trucks and lifts are now used for that task, and the flat car has been unused for a number of years.

Although the car’s road number has not been determined, it is believed to be from the CofGa’s 10701–10800, built in 1925 by Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Company in Fairfield, Alabama. The car still has its original "K" brakes, Andrews trucks (with cast CofGa letters), and Simplex bolsters. All major dimensions match a CofGa data sheet for that series. Additionally, the faint remains of the word "Georgia" can be seen stenciled on the center sill of the car.

The Society is negotiating an agreement with the Roundhouse Railroad Museum in Savannah, Georgia, for space to restore the car, with it eventually being on display at the museum. However, the Central of Georgia Railway Historical Society will be responsible for the car’s restoration, including logistics and funding.

We are currently working to arrange movement of the car from Rome to Savannah. Because of its age and obsolete trucks and brakes, the car will need to be moved by way of flatbed truck.

Although the Society does have some funds available, the majority of the cost of moving and restoring the car will have to come from planned fundraising projects and donations. You may donate online through the Society's online store (click here) via PayPal.  (The CGRHS is a nonprofit, tax-exempt 501(c)3 organization, and all donations are tax deductible as allowed by the IRS.)
