There is a story, which may be a legend, that the famous Afro-American, “Jawn Henry,” finally met his match for brute strength as a steel driver in building the tunnel at Oak Mountain near Leeds, Ala., on the Birmingham–Columbus line. Extolled in song, he supposedly keeled over from the exertion of trying to overcome his rival, the steam drill.
