HO Ventilated Box Car Kit Available Again

The Central of Georgia Railway Historical Society, Inc., is pleased to announce that our HO scale ventilated boxcar kit is available again. The kit was originally produced in 2005 and updated and re-released in 2009. The model is produced exclusively for the Society by Smoky Mountain Model Works.

The kit is based on two nearly identical groups of 40-ton steel underframe ventilated boxcars built for the CofGa by Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Co.: CG 56000-5650 (built in 1925) and CG 56501-58500 (built in 1926).

The kits feature a highly detailed one-piece urethane resin body with separate underframe and details, including both solid and ventilated doors, and open and closed end ventilators. Decals produced by Rail Graphics (using artwork provided by the Society) are included for post-1932 lettering. Detailed instructions are provided on mini-CD.

This re-run only includes kits with the Murphy”Pivoted All Steel Flexible” car roof which was applied to CofGa ventilated boxcars as replacements beginning in the mid 1930s. The kits also include a revised and updated underframe, based on new information located during the production of the Society’s HO scale pulpwood car kit. (Note that the photos shown on this page are of an earlier run with the as-delivered Murphy XLA roof.)

Note that trucks, couplers, and wheelsets are not included.

The kits sell for $46.95 and are available at our online store (click here) and at any of the train shows we attend

Please order soon as quantities are limited!

The Society’s New Website

The Central of Georgia Railway Historical Society is pleased to welcome you to our new website!

With the help of web designer Kristy Sullivan, we’ve undertaken a total redesign of our website, including  many “behind the scenes” improvements that will allow us to keep the site updated and, hopefully, provide more interesting content than before! Our new site features bold graphics and will include more photographs and information than our previous site.

Although much of the content from our old site has been transferred, we still have work to do. Future plans include the addition of a CofGa forum and online photo galleries.

Our online store has also been updated, allowing visitors to shop for select Society merchandise and to join the Society (or renew their membership).

We encourage visitors to explore the pages accessible from the menus at the top of this page. Also, our new online store can be reached by clicking on “Store.”

If there’s something you’d like to see added to the site, you can e-mail us here.

Central of Georgia Featured in Classic Trains

The Central of Georgia Railway is featured in an article in the Summer 2014 issue of Classic Trains. The four-page article, written by Society President Allen Tuten, covers the history of the CofGa, beginning with the formation of the Central Rail Road & Canal Co. of Georgia in December 1833 through the takeover in 1963 by the Southern Railway. A general overview of operations is also provided. Several photographs from the Society’s collection are included.

The article is part of Classic Trains’ “Fallen Flags Remembered” series. Contact information for the Society is included in the “fact file” that accompanies the article.

The 106-page softcover magazine sells for $8.99 and is published by Kalmbach Publishing Company. It should be available at your favorite hobby shop, from the Classic Trains web site at www.classictrainsmag.com or direct from the publisher at (800) 533-6644.
