The Upson County Railroad was incorporated Dec. 6, 1860, by a special act of the General Assembly of Georgia. Its forerunner was the Thomaston and Barnesville Railroad Company that was incorporated Dee. 23, 1839.

The Thomaston and Barnesville line connecting the two towns was completed in 1856. It was 16.25 miles in length. The line was completely rebuilt in 1870.

On Feb. 2, 1914, the Central of Georgia acquired the Upson County Railroad for a little over $840,000.
